OK, so now we don’t say Reggaetón. It's been replaced by the term Urban Latin by US industry marketing gurus who did not like the word Reggaetón. Now Urban Latin has achieved a different dimension and it is used for anything that has a Latino beat and a bit of street flavour in it...
Whatever you call it, its clear that a new generation of acts is starting to leave their mark in the genre. Jose Cosculluela aka Coscu is one of them and probably one of the most fluent street lyricists in Puerto Rico right now.
For the last 4 years he has been polishing off his lyrical skills and now he delivers “El Principe” (The Prince); his opera prima. Sixteen tracks of pure street flow. Featuring some of Puerto Rico’s biggest artists (Ivy Queen, Jowel & Randy, Wisin & Yandel), Cosculluela seems so confident fn his own abilities that all these featuring cannot overshadow the intensity of his delivery.
His street poetry takes us back to pioneers of Latin hip hop such as Mexicano 777 and Tempo and his versatility allows him to deliver on any beat: Reggae, R&B, Hip hop or Reggaetón. Coscu is one of the most interesting artists to come out of the Hispanic Caribbean since the Reggaetón boom, and El Principe is a fantastic debut album, especially in times where complacency and lack of ideas has made the whole Urban Latin movement boring and repetitive. Favourite tracks: Nau Nau Nau, Pruuum
