The jazz cafe was full and buzzing with dedicated fans eagerly awaiting the headliner of the night – Ska Cubano – and the launch of their new album, ‘Mambo Ska’. I bought myself a glass of red wine, which soon had to be downed once they began in order to free me up to dance, as was required, indeed, instinctive. This London-based Latin ska band have been a huge hit the last few years since forming, especially after their triumphant and award winning second album, ‘Ay Caramba’. They blend Jamaican ska with Cuban mambo, with a few other influences in between.

Eleven members piled on to the long stage and took over every inch of the venue with their loud instruments, their energy and their rhythms. In a hodgepodge of personalities, nationalities, generations and styles they donned everything from beach wear, dreadlocks and rustic hats to flashy suits and bling. Headed by the one and only Natty Bo, the band instantly engaged the audience with its infectious fun. There were just enough Latinos in the audience partying uninhibited in the cramped space to encourage the more reserved Brits to move their feet too, making for a great atmosphere. They played a mixture of older songs from their established albums and ones from their new CD. The older tunes seemed to go down better; time will tell if the new ones reach the same popularity, but the fans seemed keen. Perhaps the only criticism was that they weren’t entirely tight together throughout. Their regular exchange of jokes with each other on stage might have compromised their concentration at moments but hey, it was all part of the fun!
