This is the first comprehensive study of the so-called ‘Mestizo style’ vice-regal architecture of present-day Peru and Bolivia
This style of architecture - particularly architectural sculpture - is a blend of European Baroque and Andean styles, techniques, and imagery that expresses both Christian and traditional Andean religious beliefs and worldviews. Founded on extensive new archival research and field surveys - including churches that have never before been published - this is the largest architectural survey of vice-regal Latin America to appear in any language in decades. Gauvin Alexander Bailey is Professor of Renaissance and Baroque Art at the University of Aberdeen. He has written books on Latin American, Italian Renaissance, and Colonial Asian art, and has curated exhibitions at institutions in Europe and the United States.
